Understanding Pennsylvania’s Solar Incentives

In today's corporate world, environmental, social, and governance (ESG) outcomes have taken center stage. The impact businesses have on the environment—and society as a whole—has prompted an important shift in corporate responsibility.

"Every company and every industry will be transformed by the transition to a net-zero world," said Larry Fink, CEO of BlackRock, emphasizing that the question for companies is not  whether “they will be impacted” but whether “they will lead or be led” in this transformation.

So, how can your businesses combine financial returns with social good?

First, it''s time to challenge the notion that ESG concerns are separate from financial consideration. In fact, they are deeply interconnected. Climate hazards are becoming increasingly urgent, demanding immediate action. And for many organizations, the solution lies in embracing renewable energy sources.

Fortunately, Pennsylvania is leading the way, offering compelling incentives to encourage the adoption of renewable energy. Here''s what you need to know.

Pennsylvania Solar Incentives Every Business Owner Needs to Know

Pennsylvania offers several programs to alleviate financial barriers and promote the transition to more sustainable energy sources. Let''s take a look at a few incentives every business owner should be aware of:

1. Solar Energy Grant Program

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) offers grants to support the installation of solar energy systems. This program is open to various entities—including commercial businesses, nonprofits, and local governments—and helps reduce the upfront investment of implementing renewable energy solutions.

To apply for the grant, you must submit a comprehensive project proposal outlining the technical and financial aspects of the solar installation. Just remember, the amount awarded depends on factors such as system size, energy production estimates, and project feasibility.

2. Federal Investment Tax Credit (ITC)

Although not specific to Pennsylvania, the federal Investment Tax Credit (ITC) is a valuable incentive available nationwide. It provides a tax credit equal to 26% of the total cost of the solar system—which includes equipment and installation expenses.

This tax credit allows businesses to deduct over one-fourth of the solar system's cost from their federal tax liability, serving as a significant financial incentive for businesses looking to meet ESG targets.

3. Net Metering Programs

Net metering provides your business with utility credits based on the capacity of your solar system and the amount of electricity generated. For example, a one megawatt-hour (MWh) solar system may earn one credit for every one MWh of solar electricity generated.

Once earned, your businesses can sell these credits to utility companies through trading platforms or brokers, creating an additional revenue stream that helps offset initial investment costs, accelerate payback periods, and enhance the return on investment (ROI) for your solar projects.

It's important to note, however, that the market value of solar credits is based on supply and demand. To capitalize on favorable pricing, it''s always best to consult with a trusted commercial solar provider.

Why Are There Net Metering Caps In Pennsylvania?

Envisioning a world where Pennsylvania's solar incentives, combined with the advantages of meeting ESG targets, translates into a perpetual money-making machine? Unfortunately, it's not that straightforward. To maintain a fair distribution of benefits and ensure grid stability, Pennsylvania has net metering caps in place.

Initially, when the solar energy act was introduced, it included a net metering cap. For investor-owned utilities, the cap was set at 0.5% of peak demand, while for electric cooperatives, it was set at 3%.

This meant that electric companies were only obligated to offer net metering within the capacity limits defined by these thresholds. However, in response to the growing demand for solar energy, the net metering cap has been gradually raised over recent years.

And that brings us to today, where the net metering cap now establishes a limit on the total capacity of solar systems eligible for net metering in Pennsylvania. Once this cap is reached, new solar installations may not qualify for net metering benefits unless the cap is expanded.

How to Maximize the Benefits of Net Metering Programs

To maximize the benefits of net metering and Pennsylvania's solar incentives, commercial business owners can follow these strategies:

  • Optimize Your Solar System for Net Metering: An essential step in maximizing the benefits of net metering programs is optimizing your solar energy system. This involves assessing your location's solar resources, selecting high-performing solar panels, and installing your panels at the ideal angle and orientation to capture the most sunlight.
  • Monitor and Manage Energy Consumption: Closely monitor your overall electricity usage and analyze your patterns to determine where improvements can be made. By reducing energy consumption during peak hours and shifting your energy usage to off-peak periods, you can make the most of your net metering credits.
  • Stay Informed about Net Metering Policies and Regulations: Net metering policies and regulations are constantly evolving, and staying informed about these changes can help you better understand the implications for your grid net metering program,  adjusting your solar energy system accordingly.
  • Upgrade to a Class II Net Metering Facility: Another way to maximize the benefits of net metering programs is by upgrading to a Class II net metering facility. Generally, Class II facilities are allowed to generate more electricity and receive higher net metering credits than Class I, which typically applies to residential customers. So, if you have a large property or a high electricity demand, consider upgrading your solar net metering facility, as this helps further offset your electricity consumption and amplify the benefits of your net metering program.
